The Canine Good Citizen test is a test created by the American Kennel Club (AKC) to confirm that your dog can behave well with a variety of different people and in different situations. We'll walk you through all ten test items and what to expect from someone who will administer the test for you and your dog. So let's jump in!

Transcript:

- Hello, my name is Whitney, I am one of the certified trainers here at DogBoy's Dog Ranch and we are here with Jen, our training manager, and today we are going to demonstrate the ten test items for the test for good citizens of dogs.

- The canine citizen test is designed to test ten different skills to show that the dog has good manners in the community and some basic behaviors like sitting, sitting, staying, coming when called to deal with grooming or how to deal with them from a stranger, know such things. So if the dog can pass all of these ten different test items, it will be certified as a good canine citizen, which is really cool. And that's Sam, he's going to be our assistant for test one and he's a Pyrenees.

- All right, a couple of things that you need to know before we start the test are that treats are not allowed during the test. So you can use your voice and praise your dogs, but no treats are allowed during the test. So article number one accepts a friendly stranger. I go to Jen, shake her hand, exchange a few words, then turn around and walk away. What I expect from Sam is that he pay attention to his handler or just casually look around. He can look at me and deal gently with me as long as he doesn't jump at me or react negatively. Hi how are you?

- Hello good.

- I love your dog.

- Oh thank you.

- Oh, he's great. So Sam has definitely passed the first test item and we're about to move on to the second test item, which sits politely to be petted. And all I expect from him is that I don't have any negative reactions to reaching for him and touching his head and body.

- Good boy Sam, yeah.

- Hello, may I stroke your dog, please?

- Yes, in any case.

- Hi buddy.

- Say hello Sam, good boy.

- Well done. So Sam did a great job so let's move on to point number three, which is about looks and grooming. This just makes sure he doesn't react negatively to a brush or brush, and checks that his nails are nice and trimmed and his ears are clean so that he allows me to touch his paws and ears.

- So Sam lies straight down, which is perfectly acceptable for this test item. As his handler, I can put him in any position he's comfortable and I get to help him feel comfortable so I can hold him or stroke him or hold him steady while the evaluator takes the test .

- Okay, hello Sam

- Good boy Sam

- Look what you think, will you?

- Yes

- Oh, we love doing good work.

- That's a good boy.

- Yes.

- Good bud.

- Nice work, oh good boy

- Well done.

- Oh yes so Sam did fantastic and we will move on to the next test item, which is going for a walk. This item tests walking on a leash and ensures that the handler can hold his dog right next to him. Go ahead and go ahead.

- Come on Sam.

- So turn right.

- Good boy.

- Turn left.

- Good boy Sam.

- You can turn around.

- Yeah, good job, Sam keeps coming back.

- And stop.

- Stop it, sit down.

- That was nice.

- Well.

- Sam did a great job and is now moving on to step five which will go through a crowd. So all Sam has to do is lose the leash, walk through a crowd and have no reaction, not want to jump on them or care too much about them.

- Good boy Sam, come here, good job, good job, Sam, let's go this way, good boy, good boy, do you want to come here? Come on Sammy, good boy, you're getting tired, come here Sam, good job.

- Well that was perfect.

- OK then...
